CBD is absolutely booming right now. It went from being this odd product only a niche audience really understood to being a staple in the lives of millions of people in the US alone; let alone the rest of the world.
This is for a good reason. CBD can treat a wide variety of ailments and conditions, and it promotes a healthier life overall. It can be taken in a variety of ways, and it can even be combined with other safe chemicals in the same product to provide some astounding effects.
However, there are some things that you need to consider if you are on certain medications. We wouldn’t call the potential effects life-threatening, but any side-effect or chemicals clashing with your medication can be annoying and uncomfortable.
So, let’s take an in-depth look at how CBD works and what you should know about its effects on certain medications.
What is CBD?
Before we get into how CBD can affect some medications, we think it’s best you know about what CBD is in general.
CBD is a cannabinoid that is found in both hemp and marijuana. Now, before you start thinking that this automatically makes it a marijuana product, it doesn’t.
Marijuana contains small amounts of CBD, but it also has THC; which is technically why it’s illegal in some places. THC is a psychoactive chemical that is considered to be a schedule 2 drug in some places, and whether you think that’s warranted or not, it does create some euphoric and drug-like effects that lawmakers like to regulate heavily.
In contrast, CBD is a completely different cannabinoid that doesn’t make you “high” at all, and it doesn’t have any psychoactive properties. It’s just a wholesome health supplement that promotes good health and helps treat some very serious and very common issues.
Because of this, the CBD used in CBD products is not extracted from marijuana which may be illegal where you live. Instead, it is extracted from hemp plants that have been federally legalized, and it doesn’t contain any THC.
This makes CBD products legal, and it gives you all the positive benefits of CBD without any of the psychoactive effects of THC that you may or may not want.
The Benefits of CBD
For any creature with an endocannabinoid system, or mammals with a backbone, CBD has a number of useful effects.
This means that not only can you enjoy the life-changing benefits of CBD, but the most common pets can also enjoy those benefits.
Of course, given some of the things you’ll learn later in this article, make sure you check any of the warnings on your medications before using CBD to treat these symptoms if you take regular medication for something causing these symptoms already.
If you suffer from arthritis or other inflammation-related illnesses, CBD can reduce that inflammation and reduce the pain and other side effects associated with it.
If you have trouble with vomiting thanks to certain medications or illnesses, CBD can help you keep your food down and get the nutrition you need to get better.
Stress, Anxiety, and Depression:
CBD causes the stimulation of endorphins such as serotonin, dopamine, and various other necessary endorphins that regulate mood and treat mood-related conditions such as high stress, anxiety, and depression. Considering these are massive problems across the world and most often treated with pharmaceuticals that present unpleasant side effects, this is a benefit that can greatly improve your quality of life with no bad effects.
Because CBD helps the brain release and process serotonin, it not only boosts your mood, but it can help you get a good night’s sleep naturally. This is without the grogginess and discomfort that other medications create since serotonin is one of the natural chemicals needed for sleep instead of the intense tranquilizers other medications use.
Job-related pain is at an all-time high thanks to long working hours in labor positions, and chronic pain conditions are also more common than they used to be. Usually, these pain issues are treated with pharmaceutical medicines or costly procedures, but CBD can naturally relieve the symptoms of these conditions without all of that hassle.
Can CBD Affect My Medications?
This is a complicated topic to cover, and we need to cover a couple of different types of CBD products to give you an accurate answer. First and foremost, it is very rare for CBD to affect a medication. CBD is one of the safest treatment options out there, but there is one stand-out situation where you don’t want to use it, and there are some specialty products that introduce non-CBD chemicals that you need to look out for. Let’s take an in-depth look.
Medicines That Conflict with Grapefruit:
This is most commonly seen in medications that are considered statins. Statins are used for low cholesterol medications and a variety of other issues, and you’ll notice they typically come with a warning about eating grapefruit. Well, unfortunately, it’s not just grapefruit that conflicts with statin medications. CBD can do it, too.
This is because both grapefruit and CBD inhibit the P450 inhibitors in your brain, and this greatly affects the production and effectiveness of CYPs. That sounds like a lot of science talk, but what it essentially means is that CBD can stimulate the brain in a way that either greatly compounds the effects of statins or reduces their effects dramatically.
Statins can have life-changing consequences if used inappropriately. So, anything that causes them to be more or less effective than a doctor intends can create serious effects.
This is unfortunate due to all the amazing benefits that CBD can offer, but the effects are serious enough that you shouldn’t use CBD during a statin regimen.
Luckily, as CBD continues to grow in popularity, more statin manufacturers are listing it on their warning labels along with grapefruit. So, it’s getting easier to see which medications you need to worry about. As a rule of thumb, if it warns against grapefruit, you should avoid CBD regardless of whether or not it’s listed.
However, remember that this is only for statin medications and a select few other medications that aren’t as commonly prescribed. So, unless your doctor or medicine bottle warns against grapefruit or CBD specifically, you have nothing to worry about.
CBD Products with Melatonin:
Some CBD products contain melatonin on top of CBD. These are usually labeled as sleep formulas. These are great products because they can help insomniacs and other people with sleep issues get a really good night’s rest, and they’re non-habit forming which means you don’t have to worry about becoming addicted to them like you do some other sleep treatments.
However, this means you need to consider your medication before you take a melatonin-infused CBD product.
Take note: This is not due to the CBD itself. CBD can be used alongside sleep medications or medications that make you drowsy without any concern. It’s the melatonin you need to worry about.
If you’re on a medication that makes you drowsy on its own, you probably don’t want to use a CBD sleep formula that contains melatonin.
Melatonin is a chemical produced in the eye when it’s exposed to lots of sunlight and then night comes. It’s what tells your brain it’s nighttime and you need to sleep. Sleep formulas skip all the natural development of melatonin and just deliver a hearty dose of it directly to your brain. It’s useful for people who don’t produce enough melatonin on their own.
However, when combined with a pharmaceutical medication that causes drowsiness, melatonin can compound the effects of the medication and hit you a lot like a heavy-duty tranquilizer. It’s unlikely to do anything serious, but it can be unsettling, and it can make you suddenly fall asleep; which can be highly dangerous if you’re operating machinery, driving, or carrying out a dangerous task.
If you’re on a medication that causes drowsiness, do not add a melatonin-infused CBD product on top of it. Instead, opt for a non-melatonin option such as a standard CBD tincture or edible that isn’t designed to induce sleep.
CBD with THC:
CBD is perfectly legal and doesn’t have any psychoactive effects, but some manufacturers are taking to creating hybrid products that are CBD infused with THC; the cannabinoid from marijuana that is not legal in some places.
Obviously, these products are usually limited to places where THC is legal, and you typically have to buy them from legal marijuana dispensaries, but some shady dealers might sell these products illegally.
Whether or not you enjoy THC is your own business, and we’re not here to judge or recommend anything, but you do need to consider your medications and any conditions you may have before you attempt to use a product like this.
THC is psychoactive. While many people have no negative side effects from this, people who suffer from certain mental conditions such as extreme anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar, and other similar conditions might experience heightened anxiety or in rare occasions hallucinations.
This can also be triggered if you take any medications that don’t mix well with THC.
However, it is again worth noting that this is not the CBD’s fault. CBD doesn’t cause any of those things, and you’re only going to experience them if you buy THC-infused CBD products. In that case, it is THC’s fault.
Still, avoid THC-infused CBD products if you are on such medications, have those conditions, or of course, if THC is illegal where you live.
CBD with Added Vitamins:
Some vitamins, such as Vitamin D3 and B, are added to certain “feel-good” formulas due to their ability to promote long-lasting positive mental health. These aren’t dangerous, and you really don’t need to worry about this too much, but there is a case when you need to at least consider the added vitamins in a CBD product.
If you’re on a prescribed vitamin supplement to help with a condition, you may be on very large amounts of that vitamin. Some vitamin D deficient individuals are prescribed massive amounts of vitamin D that are actually somewhat risky to take on their own, but they need it to quickly get rid of the extreme vitamin D deficiency. If you take a niche CBD product with added vitamin D or any vitamin that you’re already taking massive amounts of, you may get too much.
This can produce negative side effects.
Luckily, taking such high amounts of prescribed vitamins is somewhat rare, and again, it’s not the CBD you need to worry about in this case; it’s the added vitamins.
Considering vitamin-infused CBD products are fairly niche and clearly labeled, you just need to buy a product that isn’t infused with those extra vitamins whenever you’re taking massive vitamin supplements.
CBD is Perfectly Safe: Just Buy the Right Products
As you can see, unless you’re on a statin or other medication that warns against grapefruit, CBD is perfectly safe. In every other example we gave, it wasn’t the CBD that could cause problems. It was niche additives manufacturers use to create unique formulas and entice new customers. So, if you take a medication or have a condition that doesn’t mix well with one of those additives, you can just get a more pure CBD product that doesn’t mess around with novelty formulas.
