Why CBD? Top 3 Reasons To Start Using It Now!
why cbd

As CBD products are rising in popularity, many people ask what their benefits are, if it’s safe, what it can cure and many other questions that come to mind of first-time users. The questions don’t go unanswered since CBD has become the #1 alternative treatment for anxiety, sleep disorders, allergies, skin conditions, and diseases as severe as cancer. You name it – CBD solves it.

If you consider using CBD for the first time, this article might help you cast away any doubts. It will give you plenty of information on why CBD is a great and safe option for treating various ailments.

CBD is still somewhat controversial, despite its healing results and improving the quality of life. So to get started, let’s see what CBD is.

What is CBD?

Cannabinoids drawn from Cannabis sativa plants were part of the human diet for thousands of years when Hemp was part of the food chain. Many experts say that once we eradicated Hemp from our diets in the early last century, many ailments began affecting people and causing us to be less healthy. This information alone should make us ask ourselves why CBD? Or why not?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is the second most prevalent active ingredient in cannabis (marijuana). While CBD is an essential component of medical marijuana, it is derived directly from the hemp plant, a cousin of marijuana or manufactured in a laboratory. One of the hundreds of components in marijuana, CBD does not cause a “high” by itself. The feeling of “high” comes from the other component of the Hemp plant, entirely different in content from pure CBD.

According to a report from the World Health Organization, “In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential. To date, there is no evidence of public health-related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.

why cbd

With CBD derived from Hemp, there are no illegal amounts of THC, and, under the 2018 Farm Bill, it is federally legal in all 50 states. This Bill makes CBD from Hemp a desirable product, and Hemp is also known for its abundance of rich and potent CBD.

CBD is healthy, legal and completely safe. Since it comes in many forms, including tasty gummies, not only will you have health benefits, but you will also enjoy the process of healing, which is extensively analyzed and explained in this article. That said, let’s see the top three reasons CBD should be a part of your life.

Why CBD – 1. Physical health implications

The use of cannabinoids containing plant extracts as herbal medicine can be traced back to as early as 500 BC. In recent years, the medical and health-related applications of non-psychotic cannabinoids, cannabidiol or CBD, has garnered tremendous attention.

CBD is well-known for its positive effects on mental and physical health. Its medicinal effects are part of scientific papers and scholarly articles, with abundant data on its beneficial effects on epilepsy, schizophrenia, PTSD, depression and cancer.

A study conducted on pediatric patients with intractable epilepsy, not reacting to more than seven antiepileptic drugs, showed beneficial effects of CBD in treating epilepsy. All patients started medical cannabis oil treatment between 2–11/2014 and were treated for at least three months (average six months). The selected formula contained CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol at a ratio of 20:1 dissolved in olive oil. The CBD dose ranged from 1 to 20 mg/kg/d.

Most of the children (66/74, 89%) reported a reduction in seizure frequency. Five among seventy-four patients didn’t react well to therapy. They experienced somnolence, fatigue, gastrointestinal disturbances and irritability, leading to therapy withdrawal in five patients. The results of this multicenter study on CBD treatment for intractable epilepsy in a population of children and adolescents are highly promising.

Pre-clinical evidence largely shows that CBD can benefit AD, PD and MS patients, but further, well designed clinical studies will reveal more.

Glioma is the most common primary brain malignancy. The grade IV glioma, also called glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) or glioblastoma, is one of the most aggressive types of cancer. Cannabinoids have been significantly studied in gliomas due to the urgent unmet medical needs. CBD, alone or with other agents, has been shown to induce cell death successfully, inhibit cell migration and invasion in vitro, decrease tumour size, vascularization, growth, and weight, and increase survival and induce tumour regression.

Studies in GBM (Glioblastoma Multiforme) cell lines suggest that CBD induces cell death most likely by upregulating ROS (reactive oxygen species). ROS are unstable molecules containing oxygen and easily react with other molecules in a cell. A build-up of reactive oxygen species in cells may cause damage to DNA, RNA, and proteins and may cause cell death. CBD regulates their production and thus, prevents damage to tissues and the growth of malignant cells, preventing cancer from progressing.

These are just some of the fantastic discoveries on the effects of CBD on physical health, in this case, on intractable epilepsy in children and cancer treatment. The effects are abundant and apply to much less severe conditions. Pain, allergies, stress and fatigue – to name a few.

If you are still wondering why CBD, let’s go over the other aspect of health – mental health implications of CBD.

2. Mental health

CBD has enormously strong effects on mental health, the chemistry in the brain and mental clarity. It helps you concentrate, improves your memory and prevents Alzheimer’s disease. CBD’s potency in treating mental health disorders goes as far as to alleviate symptoms in patients with schizophrenia.

In an exploratory double-blind parallel-group trial, patients with schizophrenia were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to receive CBD or placebo alongside their existing antipsychotic medication. Participants were assessed before and after treatment with CBD.

After six weeks of treatment, compared with the placebo group, the CBD group had lower levels of positive psychotic symptoms and was more likely to have been rated as improved and not severely unwell by the treating clinician. Patients who received CBD also showed more significant improvements. CBD was well tolerated, and rates of adverse events were minimal.

These findings suggest that CBD has beneficial effects in patients with schizophrenia. As CBD’s effects do not appear to depend on dopamine receptor antagonism, this agent may represent a new class of treatment for the disorder, the experts say.

CBD has also been reported to reduce psychotic symptoms in patients with Parkinson’s disease.

why cbd

Experiments conducted on rodents suggest that the effects of CBD depend on the dose, the strain, the administration time course (acute vs chronic), and the route of administration. In addition, specific key targets have been related to these CBD pharmacological actions, including cannabinoid receptors. Preliminary clinical trials also support the efficacy of CBD as an anxiolytic, antipsychotic, and antidepressant, and more importantly, a favourable risk-benefit profile. These promising results support the development of large-scale studies to further evaluate CBD as a potential new drug for treating these psychiatric disorders.

Good mental and physical health is a precondition for long life. But does CBD affect longevity directly, and to what extent?

3. Longevity

Although it is not certain precisely how CBD prolongs life, studies have been conducted on animals to discover the CBD consumption and life prolongation connection. A recent study performed on zebrafish demonstrated that developmental exposure to CBD causes significant effects on health and longevity.

In a recent experiment with zebrafish, scientists exposed the zebrafish to varying concentrations of CBD during larval development. They assessed ageing in both the F0 (exposed generation) and their F1 offspring 30 months later. The generation exposed to CBD significantly increased survival (~ 20%) and reduced female fish’s size (wet weight and length). The size reduction in fish is not beneficial to their survival since bigger fish are less prone to predators. However, this particular study result is irrelevant when it comes to human consumption of CBD.

To rule out once and for all any harmful effects and relation to drugs, let’s focus on one particular aspect of the zebrafish experiment. The Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) paradigm emphasizes that stressors, like drug exposure, early in life can instigate molecular and cellular changes that ultimately lead to adverse outcomes later in life. Since the effect on zebrafish longevity was beneficial in the experiment mentioned above, CBD is excluded from the spectre of drugs and other harmful substances. This exclusion is where any connection with psychoactive effects ceases to be relevant or truthful.

While survival of zebrafish was increased, the age-related loss of movement ability was unaffected. The effects on fecundity (the ability to produce an abundance of offspring or new growth) varied by sex and dose.

Female zebrafish particularly benefited from being exposed to CBD. The effects of CBD on size, gene expression, and reproduction were not reproduced in the F1 generation (the offspring of the zebrafish exposed to CBD in the experiment), suggesting the influence on ageing was not cross-generational.

why cbd

The zebrafish experiment introduced a period of ongoing studies, and the most important of them was the Caenorhabditis elegans study.

Pre-clinical Model Caenorhabditis elegans study, which proved to be of paramount importance, did not demonstrate any degree of acute or lifelong toxicity or related liabilities at physiologically relevant concentrations of CBD. Indeed, CBD extended lifespan up to 18.3% and increased late-stage life activity by up to 206.4%. This particular study led to adopting the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018,13, also known as the “Farm Bill”. The regulatory authorities removed Hemp-derived CBD from the Controlled Substance Act. Under this regulatory framework, CBD product manufacturing and sale management have fallen under the FDA and Federal Trade Commission ever since.

All data point to one fact – CBD prolongs life significantly.

Conclusion

While there is still much misinformation in the general public about CBD, extensive medical research continues to discover more and more positive effects of CBD on health and longevity. It is used to fight anxiety, depression, schizophrenia and improve overall physical health.

The origin of CBD can be traced back thousands of years ago, when it was used as a natural treatment option for many ailments, with success. The research conducted on animals on the effects of CBD shows great promise, leading experts to conclude that it should be considered the number one option in treating all kinds of diseases and conditions.

The unique benefits of CBD go as far as prolonging life, which could easily be considered a precedent in alternative medicine.
